Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone! It’s a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day. The date is actually observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
Now that that’s cleared up, let’s get down to the important stuff: Margaritas
Anyone who knows me knows that I WILL NOT say “no” to a margarita. Frozen, on the rocks, mango, strawberry… I love them all. But nothing beats a classic lime margarita; made the right way, with fresh-squeezed lime juice.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Limes
- Silver Tequila
- Orange Liqueur (triple sec, Cointreau)
- Salt
- Ice
- Shaking apparatus (I use a jar with a lid)
The basic ratio is 1 part lime juice, 1 part orange liqueur, 2 parts tequila.
First, cut and juice your lime. If you apply a little pressure while rolling your lime on a hard surface before you cut it, it will be easier to juice. You can see I then measured my juice in a shot glass so I know my proportions are correct, and then poured it into my shaker with ice. How many ounces in my shot glass? Don’t know, don’t care. This recipe is strictly proportions, so you can make however much you want. We don’t judge here.
Next, measure out the 1 part orange liqueur and 2 parts tequila and add to your shaker with ice.
Shake!
Run a piece of lime around the rim of your glass to coat with lime juice. Then dip the rim in salt.
Pour your shaken margarita into your salted-rim glass and adorn with a lime wheel.
Finally, my favorite part – Drink!
Stay safe!
