AKA, The Best Day of My Life.
In honor of today being the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, a solemn day of remembrance for us Potter fans, I decided to lighten the mood by sharing with you one of the best days of my life. That day was the day I went to Hogwarts and Hashbrowns: A Wizardly Drag Brunch. Some genius decided to combine three of my favorite things: brunch, drag queens, and Harry Potter. How do we nominate this person for an award?
Here in Minneapolis, Flip Phone hosts a variety of drag events at various venues all around the city. I learned about their drag brunches at Union when I stumbled across an event (a sold-out Hocus Pocus Drag Brunch) via Facebook. Then, when they announced the Harry Potter one, I nearly lost my mind. I texted screenshots of the event to my friends accompanied by no less than 40 exclamation points. The day reservations became available, I kept refreshing my browser like I was trying to snag Lollapalooza passes. Though it did sell out in a day, my level of intensity was a bit extreme.
The experience absolutely blew me away. All expectations I had for the day were surpassed in every way. I have never been happier about giving people money than I was handing those ladies my $1 bills.
Upon entering the rooftop of Union, we were greeted with the tune of Hedwig’s Theme. It felt very much like walking into the Great Hall, if the great hall had glass walls and ceilings. There was even a giant Aunt Marge balloon. The room was divided into four sections divided by, duh, Hogwarts houses. The houses would then compete for points throughout the morning with random trivia. Go Ravenclaw!
These ladies completely blew me away with their costumes, song selections, and dancing. In addition to the song selections being so “on brand” for their characters, they also took vocal excerpts from the movies and mixed them into the middle of the song. Imagine – Dobby stops shakin’ it to Britney’s “Work B**ch” and lip syncs “Dobby has no master! Dobby is a free elf!”. Or hearing Draco shout “Dementor! Dementor!” during Prince’s “Kiss”. It was EVERYTHING.
Dobby the House Elf
Songs: Britney Spears’s “Work B**ch” and Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home”
I never thought the day would come when I got to see Dobby in a drag show. I don’t have the words to describe how much I loved this.
Song: Britney Spears’s “Crazy”
I did NOT expect to see this male character, but Moody was one of my favorite performances of the day. The costume! The eye!
Song: Britney Spears’s “My Prerogative”
Rita had it all… right down to the acid green quill.
Song: Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”
A version of Umbridge that I actually like!
Song: Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman”
You couldn’t do a Harry Potter drag brunch and NOT include Bellatrix.
Song: Prince’s “Kiss”
Using any song by Prince in Minneapolis is an instant success.
Song: Do you believe in magic?
Isn’t she sweet?
Song: For the life of me, I can’t remember
Someone else had the same costume idea!
Though the event page on facebook encouraged attendees to don costumes themselves, we didn’t think anyone else would have been as into it as us. We were very much mistaken. Had I known, I would have worn my Mrs. Weasley costume.
I think one of my favorite audience costumes was the Fat Lady. It must have been relatively easy to put it together but she’s such an obscure character that I love the originality.
We also saw a number of ‘It’s mimOsa. Not mimosA” shirts, which couldn’t be more on-theme.
Food & Drink
The primary reason for attending this event was the Harry Potter themed drag and the bottomless mimosas, so I wouldn’t have even cared if the food was sub-par. Though not the best brunch I’ve ever eaten, the themed menu was enough to make up for it. I had the Quaffle Stuffed French Toast, which was basically like eating a cinnamon sugar coated donut filled with cream cheese and topped with peach compote. And getting the bottomless mimosas for like $10 was a no-brainer. Though, I did find the bottom of mine a few times…
If their other drag brunches are even close to as good as this one, I highly recommend that you attend one if you’re in the Twin Cities. Some other themes they have done: Star Trek vs Star Wars, Lady Gaga, Bey Brunch, Dolly’s Hard Candy Christmas, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Drag, T Swift vs K Kardashian… the list goes on. And they have a Real Housewives Drag Brunch coming up on May 20th! I think this has to be one of the best ways to kick-off a bachelorette party. Just remember to bring your $1 bills!
